Choosing a voice coach

Choosing the right vocal coach is not always an easy task. Here are some things to look for when choosing a vocal coach:

Can they demonstrate their singing?

A solid vocal coach should be able to demonstrate their singing abilities easily. Ask them to vocalize a scale or sing a little for you. If they're nervous or make an excuse like "being sick," it's probably a bad sign you're not with the right person.

Do they understand music?

Your voice coach should be able to speak in general musical terms and play at least one musical instrument.

What is their commitment level?

A seasoned vocal coach will have a regular schedule of singers each week and be able to handle rescheduling coaching sessions easily.

Do they have a solid coaching technique?

An experienced voice coach will instantly identify your strengths and vocal weaknesses and apply an immediate correction.
